22. And they will ask

Sitting at my desk, I opened a large envelope addressed to me bearing a Russian seal and marked in huge bold letters, "** Damian Turner ** Eyes Only **"

Removing the pages it contained, I read them. Opening a second envelope similarly marked, I pulled out a folder holding several pages and leafed through them until I came to an 8"x10" of an exceptionally attractive woman. The graininess of the picture indicated it had been taken from a considerable distance and blown up. No doubt, it was a surveillance photo. I studied the familiar face in the picture, while feeling all too familiar emotions.

“Damian.”

Engrossed in it, I didn't hear Loki walk up behind me. Nonchalant, I closed photo in the folder and returned it to my desk.

“Yes.”

“Damian, no one here has anything worth while. Have your people—“

“They discovered Victor murdered a man, Todd Leslie, in the Seattle Airport on Monday. Then purchased a number of tickets for foreign and Domestic flights from automated ticket terminals in the airport or over the phone, all under the victim's name and with his charge cards—“

“And submitted boarding passes to all the flights.”

“Yeah. Currently, his trail indicates he fled from Russia, crossed the Bearing Strait into Alaska, was aided by . . . “I paused, revealing to much information on Craig's murder of our Alaskan operative would compromise our intelligence network. “Someone whom he later killed.”

Loki grinned. “Spy stuff.”

“Spy stuff. He then flew out of Alaska into Seattle and from Seattle went somewhere else.”

“I take it, immigration for the international destinations have no records of a Todd Leslie?”

There was something bothering me, so I paused before answering him. “That's true. But he could have entered under another name.”

“What was the last flight he submitted a pass for?”

“We just can't look at the last flight. He may have had someone plant them long after he was gone.”

Sarcastic Loki said, “That's helpful.”

In earnest, I said. “It is. He's extremely theatrical. Loves operas, plays, and magic. All the battle tactics he developed for us usually involved direction through an unbelievable amount of misdirection.”

“He's attempting to validate his superiority by telling his opponent exactly what he's doing, if he's smart enough to read the clues. But, in his heart he believes no one is. Why are you looking at me like that? I know what you're thinking. I'm not a clown all the time. I just finished my doctorate in psychology. I'm not going to be a cop forever. Spain was my graduation present from me to me until Comrades Craig & Turner.”

A bit guilty I said, “I, I don't think you're a clown.”

I looked at Loki’s accusatory glance and felt compelled to answer it.

“Honestly, I don’t. I think you work very hard and play just as hard sometimes while you’re working. And you’re certainly making this assignment a Hell of a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Besides, from what you know of me, if I didn’t think you were the best Chicago had to offer, we wouldn’t still be partners.
